
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a battle against the elements. You’ve got steam everywhere and the constant risk of a stray splash of water. To get that IP55 rating, we have to stop water from sneaking into the housing and make sure the electricity stays far away from the metal frame.
Dealing with the Steam
Here’s the thing about IP55: it’s designed to keep out dust and low-pressure water jets. But in a real bathroom, the real villain is condensation. Those tiny water droplets form right on the quartz tube and try to crawl their way toward the electrical terminals. If they make it, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. To stop that, we use high-temperature ceramic insulators. They act as a wall between the live heating element and the metal chassis, and the best part is they don’t wear down even when the temperature swings wildly. We also slap silicone gaskets on the cable entries. It’s a simple fix, but it keeps the moisture from creeping into the wiring.
Heat, Moisture, and the “Sucking” Effect
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. That heat creates a pressure difference that can actually suck moist air inside the heater’s shell. To fight this, we build the enclosure with specific drainage paths so water can’t just sit there. And please, don’t skimp on the wiring. We use cables that are specifically built to handle both the heat and the humidity. If you try to use standard PVC wire, the heat from the lamp will eventually melt the jacket, and the humidity will do the rest. Not a good combination.
The Reality of Installation
At the end of the day, your safety comes down to the grounding. Even with all the IP55 bells and whistles, that metal chassis needs to be bonded to a solid earth ground. No shortcuts here. One last tip: those quartz tubes are tough when it comes to heat, but they’re fragile. If a freezing cold splash of water hits a scorching hot lamp, the tube can crack from the thermal shock. Once it cracks, the halogen gas leaks out and the lamp is toast. Just mount the unit away from the direct shower spray. Your lamps will last a lot longer, and you’ll have a lot less stress.
