
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (Without the Headaches)
Putting infrared heaters in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam, splashes, and humidity everywhere. In a place like that, electricity and water are a dangerous mix. To keep things safe, we focus on three things: sealing everything tight, picking the right materials, and getting the grounding spot on.
Dealing with the Steam
Here’s the thing about water vapor: it loves to sneak into electrical connections and mess with the insulation. To stop that, we use high-grade quartz glass tubes with really specific seals on the ends. These seals have to be airtight. If even a tiny bit of steam leaks into the tungsten filament chamber, the whole thing pops and burns out instantly. Plus, these seals have to be tough. They go from room temperature to 600°C in a heartbeat, so they can’t be the kind of material that cracks under pressure.
The Connection Points
Most failures happen right at the connection point. It’s the weakest link. We use reinforced ceramic insulators at the terminals because they stop arcing before it starts. If you’re installing these behind a bathroom mirror, the wiring needs to be rated for damp spots. Use a proper IP-rated housing so a stray splash of water doesn’t hit a live terminal. And please, seal your junction boxes with silicone or gaskets. A loose connection creates a hot spot, and over time, that heat just eats away at the wire insulation.
Heat, Metal, and Grounding
Shortwave lamps are great because they heat up instantly, but they’re intense. That kind of heat can warp cheap plastic mounts, which ruins your insulation. Stick with aluminum or stainless steel brackets. They can take the heat. But there’s a trade-off. If you seal everything too tight to keep moisture out, you might trap heat around the sockets. You need a bit of breathing room—some actual airflow—otherwise, the socket plastics will get brittle and snap. And most importantly? Bond the heater chassis to a dedicated earth ground. That way, if there is a leak, your GFCI or RCD trips immediately and shuts it all down before anyone gets hurt.
