Getting Rid of Coating Blind Spots in Heavy Aircraft
If you’ve ever worked on a large transport plane, you know the nightmare of the “blind spot.” Between the deep recesses, the wing-root joints, and those awkward fuselage overlaps, there are places where a standard fixed oven just can’t reach. You end up with cold spots, and if the anti-corrosion coating doesn’t cure evenly, you’ve got a massive problem on your hands. That’s why we use mobile IR heating carts. How it actually works Fixed systems rely on convection—basically blowing hot air around. The problem? Air is lazy. It misses the tight corners. We swap that out for short-wave IR emitters on a motorized chassis. Instead of heating the air, the IR hits the coating directly. Since the cart moves, you can drive it right up to the problem area. You aren’t wasting energy trying to heat the entire hangar; you’re just hitting the spot that needs it. Plus, we use adjustable angles on the emitters. If a surface is tucked away in a recess, you just tilt the heat in. A flat panel would never stand a chance. The gear and the heat We stick with high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. They get the job done fast, which is a lifesaver when you’re working in a drafty hangar where the cold is constantly fighting you. But you have to be careful. If you crank the power too high on a small area, you’ll scorch the primer. To stop that from happening, we use PID controllers. They basically act as the brain, tweaking the power based on how close the tube is to the fuselage. The trade-offs Now, it’s not all perfect. Moving the equipment around adds some headaches. You’re dealing with heavy-duty power cables that get yanked and twisted all day. You can’t just plug these into a wall socket, either. You need dedicated industrial power drops, or you’ll get voltage drops that mess with your curing consistency. And remember: IR is line-of-sight. If something is blocking the lamp, you get a shadow. You can’t just “set it and forget it.” You have to manually map out the cart’s path to make sure every single inch of that blind spot gets exactly the heat it needs. It takes a bit more effort, but it’s the only way to be sure the job is actually done.
