Getting Rid of Those Pesky Blind Spots in Aircraft Painting
Painting a massive transport plane is a nightmare of weird angles. You’ve got wing roots, landing gear bays, and fuselage seams that just refuse to cooperate. If you’re relying on a fixed oven, you’re going to end up with “blind spots”—places where the heat just doesn’t reach. We figured out a better way. Instead of trying to shove a giant plane into a thermal zone, we just bring the heat to the plane using mobile IR heating carts. Hitting the tough spots Standard heating arrays usually leave those annoying cold spots in the recessed areas. Our carts use short-wave IR emitters on arms that actually move and bend. You can literally angle the heat right into those tight corners. The best part? Short-wave radiation digs deep. It cures the primer and topcoat from the bottom up. This means you don’t get that “skinning” effect on the surface that traps solvents and causes those frustrating bubbles. The nuts and bolts Under the hood, these things run on high-density quartz lamps. To get enough power across a huge surface without blowing a fuse, we usually run them on 380V-415V three-phase power. You can swap out the lamp banks depending on how hot you need to get. High-wattage tubes get you up to temperature fast. But you have to be careful. Keep a pyrometer handy to watch the substrate temperature. If you dump too many kilowatts into a thin piece of aluminum, you’re going to warp the panel. And nobody wants that. The trade-off Now, mobile carts give you a ton of flexibility, but they do add a bit of manual work. Your crew has to keep a steady distance from the surface so they don’t create hotspots. To help with that, we added PID controllers. They handle the ramp-down phase automatically so the metal doesn’t take a thermal shock. Sure, you’ll need a clear floor and a few dedicated power drops across the hangar. It’s a bit more legwork than a tunnel oven, but it’s the only way to make sure every single inch of that aircraft is cured perfectly.
