Getting Rid of Aircraft Coatings with Shortwave IR
A lot of guys in the shop see an infrared lamp and think, “Oh, it’s just a fancy hair dryer.” But when you’re dealing with window frames, that’s a mistake. We aren’t trying to dry anything here. We’re using shortwave IR to basically shock the old coating right off the metal.
The trick to fast stripping
If you want to get old paint or sealant off without warping the frame, you can’t just slowly warm it up. You need a hit of high heat, and you need it now. The cool thing about shortwave IR is that it dives straight through the coating and turns into heat right where the paint meets the metal. You hit a specific temperature, the bond snaps, and the coating blisters. From there, you just peel it away. If you just hover over the surface trying to “dry” it, you’re just wasting electricity and risking overheating the rest of the airframe.
The gear and the trade-offs
We usually go with high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. The quartz is key because it lets the radiation pass through without soaking up the energy itself, meaning all that power lands exactly where it needs to: on the frame. But you have to be careful with your spacing. Get too close? You’ll scorch the primer or mess up the alloy. Too far? You lose that punchy energy density, and you’re back to square one. Honestly, the best way to handle this is with a controlled jig. It keeps your focal point steady so you aren’t guessing.
Making it work on the floor
When you’re wiring these things up, make sure your power supply is rock solid. If the power flickers, your heating gets uneven, and that’s a headache you don’t need. Also, use heat-resistant cables. Trust me, you don’t want to find out the hard way that your insulation has melted right next to the lamp head. One more thing: these lamps getinsanelyhot. Make sure your ventilation is running and everyone is wearing IR-rated eye protection. And for the love of everything,wear gloveswhen you install the tubes. If you touch them with bare hands, the oils from your skin create hotspots on the glass. Those hotspots turn into cracks, and your expensive tube fails way sooner than it should.
