Why the R7s Halogen Tube Actually Works
Here is the thing about these lamps: they run on the shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectrum. Most heaters just warm up the air around the part, which is a waste of time. These tubes skip the middleman and dump energy directly into the material. We stick with the R7s base because it’s spring-loaded. It stays put. When your machines are humming and vibrating at high frequencies, you don’t want your lamps shifting or rattling loose. Plus, there’s the halogen cycle. It stops the tungsten filament from evaporating and clouding up the quartz glass. This means your heat stays consistent over thousands of cycles. No fading, no guesswork.
Handling the Power
Depending on how much space you have, we tweak the wattage. If you’re working with those thick-walled aviation alloys, you need massive heat density. You want that “instant-on” feeling. But there’s a catch. This kind of intensity puts a lot of stress on your power supply. If you’re running a bank of 2000W lamps, your wiring needs to be beefy enough to handle the peak current. Otherwise, you’ll deal with voltage drops. And a pro tip: get your cooling fans positioned just right. If you don’t, those lamp sockets can actually melt.
Making it Work in Your Shop
We usually design these as a direct swap for those slow, clunky convection ovens. Switching to an R7s halogen array just cuts the dwell time for every single part. Your line moves faster. Everything flows better. Just be careful with the timing. Because the heat transfer is so aggressive, it’s easy to overshoot your mark. We always suggest a PID controller. If your timing is off by even a few seconds, you risk burning right through your delicate coatings.
