
Why Your Outdoor Heater Keeps Shorting Out (and How to Fix It)
When people talk about waterproofing an outdoor heater, they usually focus on the big stuff—the outer shell and the chassis. But that’s not where the real trouble starts. The actual danger zone is the spot where the lead wires plug into the heating element. Think about it. In an infrared unit, that little junction is getting blasted with heat, then cooling down, over and over again. It’s brutal. If that seal isn’t perfect, moisture finds a way in. Once it sneaks past the barrier, the insulation starts to rot, and boom—you’ve got a short circuit. The problem with “cheap” seals Most budget heaters rely on basic rubber grommets or some quick glue. It looks fine on the shelf, but those materials just can’t handle the heat. They shrink. They crack. They leave a gap. In the real world, that gap is an open invitation for humidity and rain. The wires oxidize, they burn out, and the heater dies. I see it all the time with the low-end units where the wires are just shoved through a hole and glued shut. It just doesn’t work. Doing it the right way To stop that high-temp wear and tear, we do things a bit differently. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and heat-shrink tubing that can take a beating up to 200°C. The trick is that we build the seal right into the wiring harness before the whole thing even goes together. It creates a tight, airtight fit that doesn’t budge or degrade when the element hits its peak temperature. It keeps the water out and the electricity exactly where it needs to be. The catch Now, there is a trade-off here. Because the seal is so tight and permanent, you can’t just hack into the wire and splice it if it gets cut in the field. You’ll have to replace the whole heating assembly. It’s a bit of a pain for repairs, sure. But I’d rather deal with a replacement part once every few years than have a heater short out in the middle of a rainstorm. If you’re picking out gear for a damp environment, take a close look at where the wires enter the element. If you see a simple plastic sleeve? Walk away. Look for those integrated, heat-resistant seals. Your sanity will thank you later.
