
Fixing Those Annoying Heat Spots in Your KHS Blow Molding Lines
Ever pull a batch of PET bottles off the line only to find some walls are thin as paper and others look cloudy or “pearly”? It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to your heating. When your lamps get old, they stop humming along at the same frequency. They lose that consistency. You end up with a heat field that’s all over the place, and no matter how much you tweak the settings, the bottles just don’t look right. The good news? You don’t always need a total overhaul. Sometimes, swapping out those tired OEM lamps for some precision-engineered IR tubes from China does the trick.
The reality of heat mapping
To get a preform to stretch perfectly, you need a steady flow of infrared heat. Not “mostly steady”—actually stable. We use high-purity quartz and a specific halogen cycle in our lamps so the power doesn’t just drop off at the ends of the tube. When you crank up the wattage, you get a lot of heat density in one spot. It gets your plastic to the target temperature fast. But here’s the catch: that extra power puts a lot of stress on your reflectors. If your reflectors are pitted or oxidized, they’re basically useless. Even the fanciest lamp in the world can’t fix a bad reflector.
No headaches during install
We designed these lamps to be drop-in replacements for KHS systems. No weird adapters, no custom wiring, no “making it fit.” They use standard industrial connectors, so you can swap them out and get back to work quickly. We also spent a lot of time on the chemistry of the filament. Why? Because we want the energy to actually hit the PET resin, not just heat up the air inside your oven. It’s about getting the heat into the plastic where it belongs.
A quick word of caution
High-output lamps are great for cutting down cycle times. They’re powerful. But all that power creates a lot of heat in a small space. If your cooling fans are clogged or underpowered, you’re asking for trouble. You could burn out the lamps or, worse, overheat the machine frame. Before you switch to higher-wattage tubes, just take a second to check your ventilation. It’s a small step that saves a massive headache later.
